Labris UTM: what unified network security solves

Labris UTM is Labris Networks' unified network security product line. It brings firewall, intrusion prevention, application control, web filtering and VPN together on one platform, sits at the network edge, and passes traffic through the chain those functions form.
What problem the class solves
The problem is operational more than technical. Running a separate firewall, a separate IPS, a separate web filter and a separate VPN endpoint is possible, and in large networks it is often correct. It also means four policy sets, four log sources and four upgrade schedules. In a mid-sized organisation the mistakes come out of that crowd: a rule is updated on one device and forgotten on another.
A unified platform reduces that to one policy set and one log stream. The price is equally clear: the same hardware inspects the same packet several times, and every module you enable takes from what remains.
Modules
The product's administrator documentation and support forum carry separate configuration material for: firewall and general policy, NAT policy, web filtering, IPSec VPN, SD-WAN, IPv6, user authentication, and log viewing and forwarding.
A module existing in the product does not mean it is enabled in every licence package. What is bought outright and what is subscribed to is a separate question, and it is worth asking before signing rather than after a renewal notice.
Where it sits
The typical placement is between the internet connection and the internal network. That position sets both its strength and its limit: it sees every packet that passes through it, and only the packets that pass through it. East–west traffic between servers on the same switch, and a volumetric attack that fills the access link before reaching the device, are both outside its view. The second of those needs a separate layer — DDoS protection.
Reading the capacity figures
A catalogue throughput number is usually a best case: measured with one module enabled and with large packets. If your traffic profile does not resemble that, the figure was measured under conditions that do not apply to you.
For a usable comparison, ask for three numbers together — throughput, packet rate and new connections per second — each with its measurement conditions: packet size, concurrent session count, and which modules were enabled.
Certification
Labris UTM v4 holds TRTest firewall certificate FIREWALL-26/01, valid 21 January 2026 to 21 January 2027. A certificate shows that a product was independently tested against a defined set of security requirements. It does not say the product will deliver the performance you expect under your load; that is what an acceptance test is for.
